Hemorrhoids, also called piles, are swollen veins in the lower anus or rectum. The problem most often presents when the vein walls in the rectum or anus grow so thin that the veins protrude or bulge. Hemorrhoids can occur internally (within the rectum) or externally (on the anus).

Hemorrhoids FAQs
Is it possible to prevent the development of hemorrhoids?
There are several factors that can reduce the chance of developing hemorrhoids — or at the very minimum, lessen their effect. This can include lifestyle changes such as:
- Avoid sitting for long periods of time: Take breaks throughout the day. For instance, go for a short walk every 1 – 2 hours.
- Consume foods that are high in fiber: This involves fresh veggies and fruits, whole grains, and more. If you find it difficult to eat enough fiber, a fiber supplement could be something to consider.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Get regular exercise.
- Go to the restroom upon having the urge, rather than waiting until a later time.
Are there specific foods I should avoid eating if you have hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are often caused by persistent constipation, so adopting certain changes to your eating habits may be ideal if you have this GI condition. Our Florida gastrointestinal providers may reommed that you avoid foods low in fiber. This includes foods such as potato chips, cheese, ice cream, fast food, and processed foods. During your visit, we can provide further details on food items to stay away from if you have hemorrhoids.
Can a nonprescription cream address hemorrhoids?
Nonprescription hemorrhoid creams can be a great way to relieve symptoms like inflammation and itching. In some patients, they might even help treat minor hemorrhoids. However, they usually are not the most effective treatment option. Because OTC hemorrhoid creams do not address the root cause of hemorrhoids, hemorrhoids will likely reoccur even with the use of these over-the-counter treatment creams.
How long do hemorrhoids persist?
The severity and size of the hemorrhoid you're experiencing will determine the length of time it will last. As far as internal hemorrhoids go, smaller cases typically clear up within a week or so. Larger hemorrhoids, on the other hand, may take up to a few weeks to improve or may need medical intervention. External hemorrhoids usually need to be treated by a medical provider. Treatment options could involve nutritional and lifestyle changes, the use of over-the-counter medications, a procedure like hemorrhoid banding, a surgical procedure, or a different type of care.
