A fistula is an irregular opening that forms between hollow organs in the body. These tunnels can occur from an injury, disease, or inflammation or might be surgically induced for medical reasons. Several types of fistulae can arise around the body, and they are generally grouped into one of four classifications:

  • Intestinal: a connection between two different portions of the intestine
  • Complex: multiple connections impacting more than one organ
  • External: a connection from an area of the GI tract to the skin
  • Extraintestinal: a connection between a section of the intestine to another bodily organ

Fistulae that form in gastrointestinal organs can affect a patient's health in a variety of ways. If you have been diagnosed with a fistula, our Florida providers are ready to help. Connect with a GI physician at a Gastroenterology Associates of Florida location near you to find personalized treatment for a fistula.

There are several factors that may contribute to the formation of a fistula, depending on its location and type. In general, the common causes of fistulae include:

  • Injury or trauma
  • Infection
  • Certain GI diseases (including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)
  • Complication from a surgical procedure

It's also possible for a baby to be born with a fistula. To hear more about fistulae or their causes, request a consultation with one of our caring gastroenterology providers in Florida today. Our team looks forward to educating you about the condition and assisting you through your treatment.

The indicators of a fistula may vary substantially depending on the kind of fistula that has formed and how severe it has become. Some of the common signs and symptoms of fistulae relating to the GI organs often involve:

  • Dehydration
  • High heart rate
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Undernourishment
  • Discomfort or pain

Treatment strategies for a fistula are generally based on its position and severity. In some patients, fistulae will close on their own without the need for care. In other instances, fistulae are treated with medication or surgery. Talk with your gastroenterology provider at Gastroenterology Associates of Florida to determine the ideal treatment protocol for your health and wellness.

Recently I had emergency surgery to remove my gall bladder. After surgery I was told that there was one Stent that required removal within a week. I was set up to meet with Dr. Crista Ultieg. At the appointment she examined me and checked the surgical area. Due to my other health issues she was concerned about me having another procedure so close to the previous surgery. She said that sometimes stents dislodge on their own. She asked if I minded going for an x-ray to so she could see the stent. A few hours later I received a call from her telling me that the stent was no longer there. Dr. Ultieg's expertise and caring saved me from doing an unnecessary extra procedure. Dr. Ultieg is genuine, caring, and a consumate professional. I highly recommend her if you are in need of a Gastroenterologist (GI). She is among the best of the best! Thomas Goldmann

Dr. Crista Ulteig took her time listening and explaining everything to me — something that NO DOCTOR has done since I moved to Florida four years ago from NYC. She‘s extremely intelligent and compassionate, a combination I think we are all looking for in our healthcare providers. The office staff are the most talented people in their field. They treat their guests like family, but like a family that actually gets along and like each other. Thank you for everything. If I get sick again, I know to not panic because I’ve actually got a talented care team to turn to.
