Ileitis is a problem characterized by discomfort or swelling of the ileum, which is the last part of the small intestine and connects to the large intestine. Signs and symptoms of ileitis can include the following:

  • Cramping or aching in one's abdomen, as well as fistulas (unusual channels that grow between parts of the intestine)
  • Unplanned or unexplained weight loss
  • Diarrhea

Ileitis may be caused by a multitude of diseases, with Crohn’s disease being the most common. Alternate culprits may include infections, side effects of ischemia, NSAIDs, and unusual growths. Should you require treatment for ileitis in Florida, help is nearby. Get the care you deserve by connecting with a GI provider at your closest Gastroenterology Associates of Florida location at your earliest convenience.

Diagnosing the main cause of ileitis is vital to effectively address this GI condition and to the treatment method selected by your doctor. Your specialist will review your medical history and perform a complete physical exam. A series of exams may also be conducted to verify the diagnosis, including stool analysis, X-rays, barium X-rays of the small intestine, CT scan, colonoscopy (a narrow lighted tube is inserted into the anus for a close examination), and/or biopsy.

If you are concerned that ileitis might be the source of your pain, reach out to Gastroenterology Associates of Florida to consult with a GI provider who can provide you with a proper treatment plan.

Based on the results of the diagnostic assessments, ileitis can be treated and managed through medications like anti-inflammatories, antidiarrheal and immune-suppressing medications, and supplements. Surgical intervention might be considered if symptoms are not controlled with medications or complications develop. A surgical procedure may be employed to remove damaged section(s), and/or correct intestinal bleeding. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, keep a healthy diet, and quit or avoid smoking. I had tried to get an appointment with another gastro physician twice and was told he had no appointment time for my visit for two months. I had a serious problem because of radiation I was receiving which made me very nauseous and unable to eat. Despite the problem I described to that physician’s assistant he had no time?! I wondered about the oath he had given when becoming a physician to save lives! Dr. Steinberg saw me at 8am the next morning (!) following my call to his office. He prescribed medication for the nausea and I can now eat once more! A great doctor, thank you, Dr. Steinberg!
