Liver disease is a term that describes conditions that can damage and affect the liver. Chronic liver disease happens when cirrhosis, or scar tissue, replaces healthy liver tissue. As a chronic disease, it is a long-term issue. While the damage to the liver generally can't be reversed, the goal is to slow the accumulation of scar tissue. When the chronic liver disease reaches a severe state, a liver transplant may be necessary. On the other hand, acute liver disease is a sudden onset of liver disease where your liver starts to lose its functionality. While the cause of acute liver disease can be unknown, it is commonly caused because of medicines like acetaminophen, autoimmune diseases, and Wilson’s disease (a disease that causes copper to accumulate in your liver). Request a consultation with our GI providers at Gastroenterology Associates of Florida so that we can help you live your life comfortably with liver disease.

When it comes to chronic liver disease, the symptoms you experience can differ based on how severe your cirrhosis is. If you have mild cirrhosis, the symptoms may be very minor, or you may not experience them at all. Some of the symptoms of chronic liver disease will include:

  • Fluid buildup in the stomach
  • Vomiting blood
  • Itching
  • Gallstones
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Muscle loss
  • Easy bruising
  • Spider-like veins in the skin
  • Low energy and weakness
  • Confusion as toxins build up in the blood

The symptoms of acute liver disease can be similar to chronic. They include the following:

  • Discomfort on your right side, just below your ribs
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding easily
  • Vomiting blood
  • Fluid buildup in the abdomen

As the disease progresses, you may also become extremely tired and confused. If you have suffered from any of the above symptoms, request a consultation with our GI specialists at Gastroenterology Associates of Florida. We look forward to assisting you in managing your symptoms.

The treatment for liver disease will differ based on the type that you are experiencing. If you are suffering from chronic liver disease, the damage can sometimes reverse or improve if you stop what is causing it. This includes stopping the ingestion of alcohol or treating a virus if it is the cause. Our GI providers at Gastroenterology Associates of Florida may suggest eating a healthy diet low in sodium, not drinking alcohol, or taking illegal drugs. Other treatments can include controlling iron and copper levels and using immune-suppressing medicines.

Acute liver failure treatments will depend on the underlying cause of it in the first place. If you've taken too much medication like acetaminophen in the last few hours, you will likely be given activated charcoal to help your body reduce how much medicine is absorbed in your GI tract. There are also drugs that you can take to help with this specific cause.

If viral hepatitis is the cause of acute liver failure, our GI providers will administer medicine to help you overcome it. In the case that we are unable to pinpoint the specific cause, a liver biopsy may be advised. After the results of your biopsy, we will know how to approach your treatment.
